Hog feeds: a pig feeding guide by stage

About 218 kg of feed, birth to 90 kg.

Reserve

Hog feeds come in four stages: booster (pre-starter), starter, grower and finisher. A DA feeding guide puts the total at about 218 kg of feed per pig from birth to 90 kg in 167 days, and feed is 65–80% of production costs (DA Hog Roadmap, 2022). Start with healthy stock: weaned piglets from Ronda, Cebu.

Choosing a grower feed

  • Crude protein

Grower feed: at least 16% crude protein. Starter 17.5%, finisher 13.5% (BAI nutrient standards, in PNS/BAFS 382:2024).

  • Registered with BAI

All commercial feeds must be registered with BAI. The bag shows the guaranteed analysis, ingredients, registration numbers, batch, manufacture and expiry dates (BAI AO 1 s. 2008).

  • Change slowly

Allow at least one week when switching rations (DA RFO 2). Some raisers keep grower feed from 3 months to sale to avoid diarrhoea from feed changes (DA Hog Roadmap).

Local feedstuffs

  • Rice bran (darak) and copra meal

Used in DA sample rations with yellow corn and ipil-ipil leaf meal (DA RFO 2). Keep each under 25% of the diet for growing-finishing pigs (Stein et al., 2015).

  • Cassava, camote, corn by-products

Only when properly cooked and dried (DA RFO 2).

  • No meat scraps

Do not feed untreated swill or kitchen scraps with meat: they can carry ASF (WOAH). Swill is banned in commercial farms (DA AO 41).

Water, weight and when to sell

Pigs of 51–120 kg drink 6–8 litres of water a day (DA AO 41). Floor space and health steps are in our guide to raising pigs; the cost of a full batch is in fattening pigs; sow feeding around farrowing is in pig farrowing. Why scraps are risky: African swine fever explained.

Finisher feed starts at about 60 kg or 20 weeks, and hogs are marketed at 80 kg or more (DA RFO 2). Check the live hog price per kilo before you sell. Pigs for a party are sold much lighter: see lechon pigs and the lechon price guide.

Gepanaga’s Farm opens in April 2027 in Ronda. See the piglet price in Cebu, buy in volume through wholesale, or reserve weaned biik now — a vet health certificate comes with every batch.

How many kilos of feed to raise one pig?

About 218 kg from birth to 90 kg in 167 days, in the DA feeding guide.

When do I switch from grower to finisher feed?

At about 60 kg or 20 weeks of age (DA RFO 2). Change over at least one week.
